At the time, the town of Nome, Alaska was experiencing a diphtheria epidemic, and the only way to get the life-saving serum to the town was by sled dog. A relay of teams was organized, with each team running a leg of the course to transport the serum. Balto was the lead dog of the final team, and he led his team on the longest leg of the journey through a blizzard to deliver the serum to Nome. The team was led by Gunnar Kaasen. Balto’s leg of the journey covered 54 miles in snowy, minus 40-degree temperatures, and lasted five days.
Their bravery and determination saved countless lives and made them heroes. Today, Balto is remembered as a symbol of courage and endurance.
When Matt and D, (our oldest 2 sons) were young this was one of their favourite stories. One of bravery, adventure and above all else, sticking together to overcome any challenge, no matter how large.
It wasn’t surprising when we got a new pet kitten that the decision was unanimous, and we decided to call him Balto.
Balto was dearly loved by all of us and lived to the ripe old age of 16 years.
Balto now lives on with us all as our CATamaran Leopard 44.
